National indoors 2011

Great results for those members who competed at the National Irish masters indoor championships at Nenagh yesterday.

For the ladies Deirdre Chapman won gold in the Shot Putt and Mary Jennings won gold in the 200, 400, 800 and 3K.
Tom O'Brien won gold in the high jump and silver in the long jump, Frank Quinlan won silver and bronze in the 3K and 800m respectively. Malachy McGlynn was delighted with an impressive silver in his 3k race and new to indoor competition Darren Ryan won an impressive bronze in the 200m and only narrowly missed the medals in his 60m. Ciaran Leahy pulled out just before his first race with calf problems and had to satisfy himself with helping chief supporter Pat Breen for the day. A few weeks rest and Ciaran will be back fresher than ever hopefully.

Well attended AGM

With 44 members in attendance our annual AGM was a very constructive, efficient and sociable event for Waterford AC. In nice warm surroundings in the Dome bar at WIT a full agenda was worked through with many issues presented, debated and agreed upon.

Club secretary Malachy McGlynn handled proceedings and with reports from Club Captain, Tom O'Brien, Malachy, Treasurer Deirdre Chapman and Juvenile club representative Albert Tebay all agreed that much progress has been made within the club in the past year in producing a vibrant, sociable and developing club.

Generally it was agreed that the club has increased participation at all levels of the club and with almost 500 members is in a good position. Juvenile and Masters level participation is significant but senior level needs to increase and this will take some time. County, Munster and National competition has increased, with many individual and team medals won, and some trips abroad for both championship events and road races have proved popular with members in 2010 and are to be encouraged.

It was agreed to continue to develop links formed with WIT in 2010 in terms of assisting the WIT Athletic Club in providing facilities for both cross country and Track & Field facilities in the future and assist in their proposed race in March.

Members Des Colbert and Derek Grant were thanked for their many years of service on the committee of WAC and Pauline Lambe and Tomas Caulfield were welcomed onto the committee.

The club person of the year was presented to Tom Murray for years of outstanding service to Waterford AC as both an athlete and coach and Tom spoke about the many great things happening within the club in recent years and looks forward to a very promising future for the club.

Thanks were expressed to WIT for the use of the Dome bar for the AGM.

A new email address ideas@waterfordac.com was launched and members were encouraged to communicate with the club in terms of suggestions, comments and general ideas of what the club might do and the Club Captain confirmed that all ideas will be presented to the committee on a monthly basis.

Half Marathon Done & Dusted

Well done all WAC members who ran our Annual Half Marathon in non Sunny South East weather! Nice to see people coming from around the country to run with our Deirdre Chapman (top left photo) and congratulations to Angela and Mareks in winning the Ladies and Male race respectively. With nearly 700 braving the weather it was great to hear all the plesant comments as they came in to grab a water, banana and collect their well earned Goody bag and make it over for the lovely and plentiful refreshments.
Great praise must go to all our members and their partners, families, cousins and friends who helped us run yet another great event.
Why not check out the facebook page for a read of lots of positive vibes?

Senior Club AGM

The annual AGM of the club will be held in the Dome Bar at WIT at 8pm on Friday night January 21st and all members are actively encouraged to attend.

Complimentary tea and coffee will be available from 7pm on the night and there will be a full bar until 12 midnight and into town after for those who want to carry on!

The agenda will consist of the usual items and any member who would like an item discussed can email it to tom@waterfordac.com before Wednesday Jan 19th.

It is hoped that the AGM will be a positive and social night for the club and the committee would ask as many members to attend on the night and assure all that nobody will be coerced into taking on a job.

The club thank the current committee of Deirdre Chapman, Jacinta Power, Michael Leechmere, Derek Grant, Joe Cawley, Albert Tebay, James Maguire, Alan Crookes, FintanWalsh, Mal McGlynn and Tom O'Brien for their work during 2010 and welcome expressions of interest from members who would like to join the committee.

Half marathon Goody Bag Pack sorted

Yet another excellently organised part of the WAC 'International' half marathon falls into place thanks to Deirdre, Con and Mags and the millions of Juvenile members who were enjoying yet another week off school! 1000 Goody bags are ready to go and if you look very close you will see Jacinta working so fast the camera couldn't focus! That means Billy, Cait, Gabrielle and Liz are just slow coaches and Ruth is telling the kids to get ready for the wrong camera and yes, Maire is gone for a coffee with Chelly in superquinn!
